Camponotus consobrinus, commonly known as the Banded Sugar Ant, is a species suitable for beginners due to its easy-care requirements. This large ant species features a queen measuring approximately 2cm, with workers reaching around 1cm in size. Their omnivorous diet primarily consists of sugars and carbohydrates. In terms of temperament, these ants are known for being docile and easy-going. As for colony growth, it’s considered moderate, and they are typically housed in a test tube setup until they reach 15-20 workers, at which point they should be moved to a nest and outworld.

  • Claustral founding: Queen can start colony alone without needing other ants.
  • Polymorphism: Both minor and major workers present, offering interesting behavior.
  • Diet: Needs both sugars and proteins. Sugar water or honey solution is readily taken.
  • Habitat: Prefers humid environments with dark nesting areas and access to light for foraging.
  • Temperature: Ideal range is 22-28°C.
  • Humidity: 70-80% humidity is recommended.
  • Feeding: Offer small insects and protein sources like boiled egg yolk alongside sugary liquids.
  • Escape risk: Low, but proper escape prevention measures are still needed.
  • Interesting observation: Known to feed regurgitated food to each other.
